Life in the Aquarium

The story “Aquarium“ puts us in the shoes of Basma, a girl who fled the war in Syria with her family and moved to Rome. Basma feels like she is living in an aquarium, as she cannot understand what other people tell her in the language of her new city. Fortunately, the kindness of people and a new friend make a difference.

Here is an excerpt from the story:

“Day after day, summer arrived, and Martina’s mother suggested taking us for a day at the beach, in Ostia. My parents were uncertain, but as they finally saw me less sad, they agreed. I remember my vacations in Lattakia, with its monuments, its luxury hotels and palm trees on the beaches. Ostia is not as beautiful as my Sira, but I liked it. The wind and the smell of the sea let me breathe, finally.“

Italian version
